Product introduction
ASTM A53 is a standard specification for pipe, steel, black and hot-dipped, zinc-coated, welded and seamless. This widely used material covers seamless and welded steel pipe with nominal wall thickness, commonly employed for mechanical and pressure applications as well as ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.

| Property | ASTM A53 | ASTM A106 | ASTM A500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Use | General purpose pipe | High-temperature service | Structural tubing |
| Temperature Limit | Moderate temperatures | Up to 750°F (399°C) | Ambient temperature |
| Manufacturing | Seamless & welded | Seamless only | Welded & seamless |
| Grades | A & B | A, B, C | A, B, C, D |
| Typical Coating | Black or galvanized | Black | Black or painted |
Welding: Grade B has better weldability than Grade A due to controlled carbon content
Threading: Excellent threadability, especially in Grade B
Bending: Good cold bending properties within recommended radii
Galvanizing: Hot-dip galvanized version provides corrosion resistance
Joining Methods: Can be threaded, welded, or coupled with mechanical connections
| Nominal Pipe Size | Wall Thickness | Grade B Pressure Rating (psi) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 0.109" | 1,670 psi |
| 1" | 0.133" | 1,330 psi |
| 2" | 0.154" | 1,080 psi |
| 4" | 0.237" | 790 psi |
| 6" | 0.280" | 670 psi |
Note: Pressure ratings based on Barlow's formula with design factor. Actual ratings depend on temperature and service conditions.
Not for high-temperature service above 400°F (204°C)
Type F pipe should not be used for bending, flanging, or similar forming operations
Galvanized pipe may develop white rust if stored improperly
Threaded connections may reduce pressure rating due to wall thickness reduction
Not recommended for cryogenic or severely corrosive environments without additional protection
