24 Hour Emergency Steel Machining Response

Hot rolling and cold rolling

1. Temperature

  • Hot Rolling: The steel is heated to a very high temperature (above 1,000°C), making it glow red and easy to shape.

  • Cold Rolling: The steel is processed at room temperature. It usually starts as hot-rolled steel that has cooled down.

2. Surface Quality

  • Hot Rolling: The surface is rough, scaly, and sometimes has a bluish-grey color from the heat.

  • Cold Rolling: The surface is smooth, shiny, and clean, often looking like polished metal.

3. Precision

  • Hot Rolling: Because the metal shrinks slightly as it cools, the dimensions are less precise.

  • Cold Rolling: It allows for very tight tolerances and accurate shapes.

4. Strength and Hardness

  • Hot Rolling: The steel is softer and more ductile (easier to bend or form).

  • Cold Rolling: The process makes the steel harder and stronger (work hardening), but it becomes less flexible (more brittle).

5. Common Uses

  • Hot Rolled: Used for large structural items where the look doesn't matter (e.g., I-beams, railroad tracks, pipes).

  • Cold Rolled: Used for products requiring a nice finish or exact dimensions (e.g., car bodies, furniture, home appliances).

Simple Summary:

  • Hot rolling is for strength and size (rough finish).

  • Cold rolling is for looks and accuracy (smooth finish).
