It all starts with a solid round steel billet. First, the surface is inspected for defects and it is cut to length. A centering hole is then drilled in one end to guide the next step. Finally, the billet is heated in a furnace to around 1150–1280°C, making it soft and malleable like dough.
The glowing hot billet is fed into a piercing mill. It is propelled forward by rotating rollers while a water-cooled piercing mandrel is forced into its center. This action squeezes the solid steel open, creating a rough hollow shell. This technique is known as the Mannesmann process.
The hollow shell is then processed to achieve precise dimensions, typically via two routes:
Hot Rolling: The shell is immediately sent to a mandrel mill, where it is rolled to reduce wall thickness and extend length. It then passes through a sizing mill to perfect the outer diameter.
Cold Working: For higher precision or smoother surfaces, the pipe is processed at room temperature via cold rolling or cold drawing. This improves strength and finish but is slower.
The formed pipe undergoes final conditioning:
Cutting & Cooling: It is cut to length and slowly cooled.
Straightening: Any bending is corrected.
Heat Treatment: Processes like normalizing, annealing, or quenching & tempering are applied to achieve the desired mechanical properties.
Pickling: An acid bath removes surface oxide scale, revealing clean metal.
Every pipe must pass strict quality checks:
Non-destructive Testing: Ultrasound or eddy current scanners detect internal flaws.
Hydraulic Test: High-pressure water checks for leaks.
Dimensional Check: Outer diameter, wall thickness, and surface smoothness are verified.
Marking & Storage: Qualified pipes are marked with specifications and stored for shipment.
